The Story Of My Life

start being bored [here]

Well. I have learned that some people browse other peoples homepages just to read everything about that person. I'm not one of them but here's for you little perverts (yes, you!) out there who have nothing better to do but to peek and poke into the story of my life. :)

The 14:th of August 1970 @03:41 a baby boy who would have loved to be born a lot earlier was finally allowed out. Weighing in at only 2 580g he wasn't much of a sight, not surprisingly a lot has happened since. He was given the names Bengt Olof Bergholm. Olof was after his grandfather (maternal side) and Bengt was the result of a desperate search for name that couldn't be ridiculed. That search failed royally and Bengt is a really grateful name to make fun of... but against all odds I survived. :)

The first years where traumatic for this baby. He had surgery for hernia (age 1,5). He was diagnosed with asthma and allergy against pollen (birch and grass), fur-bearing animals and mite (dust) and he spent his two first X-mases with 39-40° centigrade's of fever. When he went to preliminary school he made the serious mistake to play with a girl instead of helping the boys dig a hole to China through the sandbox. It was the start of 9 years of being bullied and being an outsider. It didn't stop until one year before high school.

Well..  before that my parents got divorced (age 4). My grandfather died (age 6) and then my father died of cancer (age 11). Brilliant start in life, right? :) Have we fallen asleep yet? Or maybe in tears... On the brighter side I also picked up an interest in aircraft and flying that has stayed with me ever since and attempts to become an airline pilot have been made. My father was a merchant in Hi-Fi/Video/TV/Radio and other appliances and thanks to that I'm also a natural around everything with a button on it. Electronics, gadgets, thingies... boys toys. :)

I went on to study economy in high school, something I never came to work with, but that gave a lot valuable insights into marketing and corporate economy that can be applied to all kinds of work. In 1990 I met my first great love and that lead to me moving away from home to my/our own flat. As you can see on this site I no longer live in the 2-room flat that we purchased at the time, but I did for almost 10 years. The same year I graduated I got my first jobs in restaurants (yes, McD is one of them) but I wanted to make more money and also have an employer who would let me take a leave of absence while doing my military service. I started to work for Saab Aircraft in their parts-workshop. The worst time of my life. Stuck in a dark, noisy environment from before sunrise till after sunset (in the winters) with co-workers who's horizon ended the next payday. I then served 11 months with the Royal Swedish Airforce as an aircraft mechanic (SK-60). Later I was laid off from Saab due to lack of work when the company hit hard times, and then I went unemployed for a long time (4 years or so). During that time, my life and my career goals changed drastically.

The X-mas 1993/94 I saw the screensaver "Johnny Castaway" on a PC belonging to a friend of my girlfriend at the time. I was sold... I just had to have a PC so I could see more of this funny little character. Silly huh? I bought a 386 SX-20 of another friend's company and the rest is history. :) I bought a modem and started BBS:ing and FidoNet:ing. I built, upgraded and troubleshooted my own and other peoples PCs. Yes, I am a MicroSlave® and I'm not awfully proud of that but its what I know and it makes me a shitload of money everyday. :)

I finally got a long-term employment with one of the worlds 3 largest consulting companies, Cap Gemini. The work was titled IT-coordinator and was strictly internal, no consulting. This has changed since I did a lot of consulting in PC-servers, routers and IT-security.

Well. That was history. If you survived this long, here is your treat...

Then... what did all of this do to me? Who did I become? Who am I?

*WARNING* This part is heavily biased since everything is based of my perception of myself but... who gives a %&¤#!?*  :) *WARNING*

Today...

...the infant has grown to stand 1.82 centimetres tall and weighing in at roughly 105 kilograms. My residual self-image (Matrix!!!) is pretty much thinner than that...

Family

Only my mother (1936) Ingrid is still alive. My half-bother (paternal side) Kaj passed away in May 2009 but his four children are still alive... :-). I also have an uncle and 4 cousins on the maternal side. That's about it...

Home

Linköping is a by international standards small town with its 144 000 inhabitants, but it is home and it has most of what I crave. If I can avoid it I will never move away from here for any longer periods. Linköping is home to Saab Aircraft and civilian planes like Saab 340 & 2000 were built here. All Saab military aircraft are also developed and built in Linköping. The only official Swedish Air Force Museum is also situated here and I used to be the administrator of the technical platform for their website :)

Travel

My mother brought me along abroad for the first time when I was 4½ years old and ever since that day we have been making 1-2 trips abroad every year. This leads to me having visited some 35+ different countries to date.

Finland, Norway,Denmark, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Germany, Bulgaria, Belgium, The Netherlands, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Tunisia, Turkey, Israel, Morocco, Gambia, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Australia, Mexico, U.S.A, Fiji, India, Nepal... heck, I don't remember them all :)

Recently I tried to map them all out on a site called Travbuddy. Check it out.

I love to get away but I don't really enjoy basking in the sun all that much. I wanna see and experience the country, but I still wanna feel that I'm on vacation so I don't go backpacking/trekking really either. Arranged tours and excursions is more my thing with a little adventure on top.

In the mid-80's I spent 3 summers in the south of England, more exactly in Brighton (1985), Hastings (1986) and Eastbourne (1987). These trips were so called "language travel", that is the purpose was to study English and stay with an English host-family. These trips are among the best things that I have ever done, they are actually among the really bright spots of my life. I highly recommend them to anyone!

Photography

A natural spin-off of my interests in aviation and travel is photography. I own a really great camera, the Nikon F4s, and I take a lot of really good pictures. Since this page was originally written, cameras have turned digital and I now have a Nikon D90 and the F4s is mainly sitting on the shelf entertaining the dust puppies. An abundance of examples of my photos can be found in the blog.

Flying

My interest for aviation was spawned in the early 80's when I found a friend who built and painted really nice plastic models of WWII aircraft. I wanted to learn how to do the same and bought a model of the Westland Scout helicopter. Off course this lead on to wanting to know more and my mother gave me Bill Gunston's excellent book "Modern Fighters & Attack Aircraft" for X-mas. I visited airshows, found the local airfields and flying clubs and now I have a private pilot's license since 1989 and have amassed some 900 flying hours on types such as Piper PA-28, Cessna/Reims C-152 and Saab MFI-15-200A Safari. I have also pursued a career as commercial pilot but with some medical, other problems and bad luck, I have not followed through all the way on that path, yet...

Music

When I was young I listened only to "Svensktoppen" which is only traditional, native Swedish music but then slided into ABBA and The Beatles and along into general pop and hitlist music. 80's is the favourite, between 1984-1988 the best music ever was made! :)

Nowdays I'm mainly into mp3:s but I do still buy albums of artists like Jean-Michel Jarre, Enya, Dire Straits, Yello, Eva Dahlgren, Pet Shop Boys, Madonna, S.P.O.C.K and Björk. My taste is still with mainstream dance music but also a lot of other more obscure stuff... and... I enjoy it through good Hi-Fi hardware (Linn, Mission) and at some volume :)

Some of my favorite tunes, don't try to change station if I'm listening!

* Yello feat. Shirley Bassey -  The Rhythm Divine - Wow... that voice, what can one say?!

* Björk -  It's Oh So Quiet - Wonderful mix of big band explosions and sweet whispering by that unique voice of hers...

* The Beatles - Here Comes the Sun - Yes, here the sun comes... This tune can make one happy in an instant!

* Jean-Michel Jarre - Souvenirs of China - Truly a wonderful blend of sound samples, rhythm and sentiment.

* The Mamas & the Papas - Dream a Little Dream of Me - Sentimental flirting... also check out Sissel Kyrkjebö's recording of this song, she's got a better voice.

* Johann Sebastian Bach - Aire - Don't listen to this if you are feeling blue, it's frail beauty and sadness will kill you...

* Helen Sjöholm & Benny Anderssons Orkester - Vår Sista Dans - A great but classical sad love song in swedish.

* RAH Band - Clouds Across the Moon - Another sad love song but with a somewhat different theme.

Diving

For many years and many of my trips abroad I have been confined to snorkelling, on the great barrier reef, the Red Sea etc. This was kind of frustrating, so in 2000 I got myself some scuba training and I now hold a PADI Advanced Open Water License. I'm not really a diving guy so I see myself using it mainly when there is some real nice benefit to it, abroad that is :)

Skydiving

Once upon a time (1987) I also did some skydiving. Unfortunately I had an accident on my second jump and the school wasn't very professional about what had happened so I quit. Still I am thinking/wishing every month or so about finding a school or instructor that I can trust to be able to start over...

Medical

I am healthy apart from some remains of the above mentioned allergy. My eyesight is reduced on my left eye and I use glasses full-time. I also suffer from a low degree of tinnitus. Allergy prevents me from owning any pets and this is a grief since I would really love to have a cat. It also turns out that my body can tolerate poodles and I am proud the "daddy" of Cisco. Although I still really prefer cats, he is a joy and daily challenge and reward :)

Sex

I am very interested in sex and other relational issues. I am very open-minded and I do not hesitate in trying new things. I do make a difference between sex and love. I know from personal experience that sex is possible and can be very gratifying without any other feeling than physical attraction. Note, I'm not saying that sex isn't emotionally better with someone you love, because it IS! :)

Religion

When I was younger I spent a lot of time in the local (christian) church, I was a scout and I sang in the choir. I can never say I was a believer and when I grew older I left the church. Today I respect those who practice their religion with respect to others but I cannot understand what they find in it. Lately I sort of drifted into atheism and I enjoy the work of Richard Dawkins. I think people should start believing in themselves instead of blaming their fortune/misfortune on the possible intervention of a higher power.

I believe in myself and I live as long as I can see and experience new things, I live out of curiosity, not to serve the world or other people as best as I can aiming at making it into "heaven". Egoism is the motivation, but not the bad kind.

Politics/World Issues

I used to be on the right wing of the political scale even though most Americans would probably have label me as "pinky". I openly admit that I voted with the swedish conservative party Moderaterna. However the "alliance" of mid-right wing parties currently ruling has made me somewhat politically homeless since they let down all the core ideals that made me vote for them all these years. After reading some liberal blogs I now realize that liberalism is the ideology from which the best parts that I liked about the right-wing parties came. The problem is there are no real liberal parties in Sweden today. So what to vote for when autumn comes?
I think it is necessary to follow what happens in the world and I read the paper/news every day. Without knowing your history and learn from others mistakes, you cannot build the future. I respect my adversaries and I think respect is one of the the key things in life.
