The Story Of My Life

start getting bored [here]

Well. I have learned that some people browse other peoples homepages just to read everything about that person. I'm not one of them but here's for you little perverts (yes, you!) out there who have nothing better to do but to peek and poke into the story of my life. :)

The 14:th of August 1970 @03:41 a baby boy who would have loved to be born a lot earlier was finally allowed out. Weighing in at only 2 580g he wasn't much of a sight, not surprisingly a lot has happened since. He was given the names Bengt Olof Bergholm. Olof was after his maternal grandfather and Bengt was the result of a desperate search for name that couldn't be ridiculed. That search failed royally and Bengt is a really great name to make fun of... but against all odds I survived. :) The first letters of my names make up the abbreviated nickname I sometimes am known by, BoB

The first years where traumatic for this baby. He had surgery for hernia (age 1,5). He was diagnosed with asthma and allergy against pollen (birch and grass), fur-bearing animals and mite (dust) and he spent his two first X-mases with 39-40° centigrade's of fever. He was a quite precocious child and when he went to preliminary school he made the serious mistake to play with a girl instead of helping the boys dig a hole to China through the sandbox. It was the start of 9 years of being bullied and being an outsider. It didn't stop until an incivdent one year before high school that turned into a police matter.

Well..  before that my parents got divorced (age 4). My maternal grandfather died (age 6) and then my father died from cancer (age 11). Brilliant start in life, right? :) Have we fallen asleep yet? Or maybe in tears... On the brighter side I also picked up an interest in aircraft and flying that has stayed with me ever since and attempts to become an airline pilot have been made (fully qualified in 2010). My father was a successful merchant in Hi-Fi/Video/TV/Radio and other appliances and, I would like to think, thanks to that I'm also a natural around everything with a button on it. Electronics, gadgets, thingies... boys toys. :) His business, TV Centrum, later Bergholms Radio & TV, was a local empire for a while sporting 5 stores in differnt parts of the county.

I went on to study economy in high school, something I never came to work with, but that gave a lot valuable insights into marketing and corporate economy that can be applied to all kinds of work. In 1990 I met my first great love and that lead to me moving away from home to my/our own flat. As you can see on this site I no longer live in the 2-room flat that we purchased at the time, but I did for almost 10 years. The same year I graduated I got my first jobs in restaurants (yes, McD was one of them) but I wanted to make more money and also have an employer who would let me take a leave of absence while doing my military service. I started to work for Saab Aircraft in their parts-workshop. The worst time of my life. Stuck in a dark, noisy environment from before sunrise till after sunset (in the winters) with co-workers who's horizon at best ended the next payday. I then served 11 months (910402--920228) with the Royal Swedish Airforce as an aircraft mechanic (SK 60). Later I was laid off from Saab due to lack of work when the company hit hard times, and then I went unemployed for a long time (4 years or so). During that time, my life and my career goals changed drastically.

The X-mas 1993/94 I saw the screensaver "Johnny Castaway" on a PC belonging to a friend of my girlfriend at the time. I was sold... I just had to have a PC so I could see more of this funny little character. Silly huh? I bought a 386 SX-20 from another friend's company and the rest is history. :) I bought a modem and started BBS:ing and FidoNet:ing. I built, upgraded and troubleshooted my own and other peoples PCs. I have since remained in IT with different companies working primarily with infrastructure, networking, security and virtualization. My current employer is Advania

I finally got a long-term employment with one of the worlds 3 largest consulting companies, Cap Gemini. The work was titled IT-coordinator and was strictly internal, no consulting. This changed over time and I did a lot of consulting in PC-servers, routers and IT-security.

Well. That was history. If you survived this long, here is your treat...

Then... what did all of this do to me? Who did I become? Who am I?

*WARNING* This part is heavily biased since everything is based of my perception of myself but... who gives a %&¤#!?*  :) *WARNING*

Today...

...the infant has grown to stand 1.82 centimetres tall and weighing in at roughly 100 kilograms. My residual self-image (Matrix!!!) is pretty much thinner than that...

Family

No member of my close family is alive anymore. My mother (1936) Ingrid passed in early 2012. My half-bother (paternal side) Kaj passed away in May 2009 but his four children are still alive... :-). I also have an uncle and 4 cousins on the maternal side. Uncle passwed away too back in 2015(?). One of the cousins succumbed to cancer in 2022.

On Jan 8 2020 a small miracle entered my life and this world. My stepson Alexzander was born and I was there to meet him and support his mother, my fiancée Zarah. At the time of updating this page he is a few days shy of turning 4 years and I love him so much, he is the most adorable and wonderful little person and it is a true priviledge to coach him and share his discoveries of what life has to offer. He also carries my name which is of course flattering.

Home

Linköping is a by international standards small town with its 164 000 inhabitants, but it is home and it has most of what I crave. If I can avoid it I will never move away from here for any longer periods. Linköping is home to Saab Aircraft and civilian planes like Saab 340 & 2000 were built here. All Saab military aircraft were also developed and built in Linköping. The only official Swedish Air Force Museum is also situated here and I used to be the administrator of the technical platform for their first website :)

Travel

My mother brought me along abroad for the first time when I was 4½ years old and ever since that day we have been making 1-2 trips abroad every year. This leads to me having visited some 40 different countries to date.

Finland, Norway, Denmark, Austria, Iceland, Estonia, Latvia, Germany, Bulgaria, Belgium, The Netherlands, Great Britain, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain, Greece, Tunisia, Turkey, Israel, Morocco, Gambia, United Arab Emirates, Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Russia, Australia, Mexico, U.S.A, Fiji, India, Nepal... heck, I don't remember them all :)

I love to get away but I don't really enjoy basking in the sun all that much. I wanna see and experience the country, but I still wanna feel that I'm on vacation so I don't go backpacking/trekking really either. Arranged tours and excursions is more my thing with a little adventure on top.

In the mid-80's I spent 3 summers in the south of England, more exactly in Brighton (1985), Hastings (1986) and Eastbourne (1987). These trips were so called "language travel", that is the purpose was to study English and stay with an English host-family. These trips are among the best things that I have ever done, they are actually among the really bright spots of my life. I highly recommend them to anyone! The last trip to Eastbourne had a different profile as it was a course for aspiring charter tour guides. It was me and 29 girls in the class. As it turned out, I beat them all and graduated as #1! But in all fairness I had a lot of pevious travel experience that most of them did not.

Photography

A natural spin-off of my interests in aviation and travel is photography. I own some really nice cameras and lenses such as Nikon D500, D750 300mm/f4 PF, 500/f5.6 PF, 24-70/2.8, 24-120/f4 and if I can say so I take a lot of really nice pictures. I travel to Swedish and overseas airshows and an abundance of examples of my photos can be found at my site, Check it out.

Flying

My interest for aviation was spawned in the early 80's when I found a friend who built and painted really nice plastic models of WWII aircraft. I wanted to learn how to do the same and bought a model of the Westland Scout helicopter. Off course this lead on to wanting to know more and my mother gave me Bill Gunston's excellent book "Modern Fighters & Attack Aircraft" for X-mas. I visited airshows, found the local airfields and flying clubs and now I have a private pilot's license since 1989 and have amassed some 1 000+ flying hours on types such as Piper PA-28, Cessna/Reims C-152 and Saab MFI-15-200A Safari. I have also pursued a career as commercial pilot back in the early 90's but with no jobs to be found I didn't followed through. In 2010 I realized that if I was ever going to be a commercial pilot I needed to finalize my training and I attended a distance training for the ATPL theory at Scandinavian Aviation Academy in Västerås and then flew att Kungsair in Norrköping. Got my CPL with frozen ATPL, ME/p, IR and MCC and applied for some jobs. When I learned about 21y.o's graduating top-of-their-class and sending in 300+ applications and not even getting a interview I concluded that a 40+ in not-so-great-shape would never get work so I returned most of my licenses and currently only hold a PPL w/ NQ again. In 2021 I stopped flying as an indirect consequence of getting a type 2 diabetes diagnose, COVID pandemic made it hard to see my AME and after contemplating for some time I reached the decision that I had lost the spark long before that point and it was time to at least take a hiatus from flying. Yet a painful decision, but life goes on.

Music

When I was young I listened only to "Svensktoppen" which is only traditional, domestic Swedish music but then slided into ABBA and The Beatles and along into general pop and hitlist music. 80's is the favourite, between like 1983-1989 the best music ever was made! :)

Nowdays I'm mainly into Spotify but I no longer buy any hard-copy albums. My taste is still with mainstream dance music but also a lot of other more obscure stuff... and... I enjoy it through good Hi-Fi hardware and at some volume :)

Some of my favorite tunes, don't try to change station if I'm listening!

* Yello feat. Shirley Bassey -  The Rhythm Divine - Wow... that voice, what can one say?!

* Björk -  It's Oh So Quiet - Wonderful mix of big band explosions and sweet whispering by that unique voice of hers...

* The Beatles - Here Comes the Sun - Yes, here the sun comes... This tune can make one happy in an instant!

* Jean-Michel Jarre - Souvenirs of China - Truly a wonderful blend of sound samples, rhythm and sentiment.

* The Mamas & the Papas - Dream a Little Dream of Me - Sentimental flirting... also check out Sissel Kyrkjebö's recording of this song, she's got a better voice.

* Johann Sebastian Bach - Aire - Don't listen to this if you are feeling blue, it's frail beauty and sadness will kill you...

* Helen Sjöholm & Benny Anderssons Orkester - Vår Sista Dans - A great but classical sad love song in swedish.

* RAH Band - Clouds Across the Moon - Another sad love song but with a somewhat different theme.

Diving

For many years and many of my trips abroad I have been confined to snorkelling, on the great barrier reef, the Red Sea etc. This was kind of frustrating, so in 2000 I got myself some scuba training and I now hold a PADI Advanced Open Water License. I'm not really a diving guy so I see myself using it mainly when there is some real nice benefit to it, abroad that is :)

Skydiving

Once upon a time (1987) I also did some skydiving. Unfortunately I had an accident on my second jump and the school wasn't very professional about what had happened so I quit. Still I am thinking/wishing every month or so about finding a school or instructor that I can trust to be able to start over...

Medical

I am (was? age is happening...) fairly healthy apart from some remains of the above mentioned allergy. My eyesight is reduced on my left eye and I use glasses full-time. I also suffer from a degree of tinnitus. Allergy should prevent me from owning any pets and this was a grief since I would really love to have a cat. It also turns out that my body can tolerate poodles and I used to be the proud "daddy" of Cisco. Although I still really prefer cats, he was a joy and daily challenge and reward :)
In recent years I tried having a cat and we became foster home for a litter of kittes to see how it worked with me and medication. Tuned out surprisingly well and we now have 3 cats, the first and most dear is Chaplin. It later developed into a cat shelter operation that we ran for some 3 years helping roughly 300 cats to a new home.

In 2020 I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.

Sex

I am very interested in sex and other relational issues. I am very open-minded and I do not hesitate in trying new things. I do make a difference between sex and love. I know from personal experience that sex is possible and can be very gratifying without any other feeling than physical attraction. Note, I'm not saying that sex isn't emotionally better with someone you love, because it IS! :)

Religion

When I was younger I spent a lot of time in the local (christian) church, I was a scout and I sang in the choir. I can never say I was a true believer and when I grew older I left the church. Today I respect those who practice their religion with respect to others but I cannot understand what they find in it and I may challange them at times. Lately I sort of drifted into atheism and I enjoy the work of Richard Dawkins. I think people should start believing in themselves instead of blaming their fortune/misfortune on the possible intervention of some higher power.

I believe in myself and I live as long as I can see and experience new things, I live out of curiosity, not to serve the world or other people as best as I can aiming at making it into "heaven". Egoism is the motivation, but not the bad kind.

Politics/World Issues

I used to be on the right wing of the political scale even though most Americans would probably have label me as "pinky". I openly admit that I voted with the Swedish conservative party Moderaterna. However the "alliance" of mid-right wing parties currently ruling has made me somewhat politically homeless since they let down all the core ideals that made me vote for them all these years. After reading some liberal blogs I now realize that liberalism is the ideology from which the best parts that I liked about the right-wing parties came. The problem is there are no real liberal parties in Sweden today.
I think it is necessary to follow what happens in the world and I read the paper/news every day. Without knowing your history and learn from others mistakes, you cannot build the future. I respect my adversaries and I think respect is one of the the key things in life.

STILL UNDER CONSTRUCTION, MORE MIGHT/WILL BE ADDED IN TIME, COME BACK IN A YEAR OR SO :)
